From Skeptic to Faith Walker: How God Taught Me to Trust Him

As someone who’s always been skeptical, that mindset eventually crept into my relationship with Christ. I thought I had faith. I mean, I believed in Jesus, a man I’ve never met who literally died, rose from the grave, and walked the earth for 40 days. That’s the foundation of Christianity, and I believed it. But when it came to trusting God with the details of my everyday life, I struggled.

I would pray, but deep down, I didn’t believe things would actually change. And when they did, I was shocked. That disbelief came from years of disappointment. I’d watched people make promises and break them. I got used to things falling through. So I stopped expecting good. I stopped trusting. And without realizing it, I started treating God like He was just another person who might let me down.

That kind of mindset is dangerous. It makes your walk with God unhealthy. I wasn’t giving Him my full trust, because I had already decided how things would play out. I thought I was protecting myself from heartbreak but really, I was blocking my own blessings.

The truth is that faith and trust go hand in hand. Abraham wasn’t called righteous because he was perfect, he was called righteous because he believed God. David didn’t defeat Goliath because he had skill, he believed God was bigger than what was standing in front of him. Lack of faith is often a sign that we don’t really trust who God is. And that was me.

But over the past few months, God has been renewing my mind. He’s taken me from being a skeptic to walking by faith. And if you know me, you know that could only be God.

Faith isn’t always something you can explain. It’s a quiet confidence between you and the Lord. Hebrews 11:1 says faith is the substance of things hoped for and the evidence of things not seen. Abraham couldn’t see the nations coming from him. He just had a word and that was enough. When God told him to move, he moved. No hesitation. No backup plan. Just obedience.

That’s what faith really is obedience. It doesn’t require logic. It requires surrender. When we try to rationalize what God says, we’re basically telling Him we know better. That mindset will always pull you out of alignment. When God speaks, it’s not time to think, it’s time to move.

Just look at Saul in 1 Samuel. God gave him a clear word: destroy everything. But he spared one person because he thought he had a better idea. Then he tried to cover it up with sacrifice. But God wasn’t impressed. He didn’t want Saul’s logic. He wanted his obedience. Because Saul couldn’t obey fully, he forfeited the promise and the crown. Pride always gets in the way of obedience. But full obedience is what protects your purpose.

Walking in faith means silencing every voice that tries to talk you out of what God said. Right after a word from the Lord, doubt almost always follows. That’s not from God, it’s the enemy trying to keep you stuck. He’ll even offer you a false sense of peace to keep you from moving forward. But that’s just a trap to keep you stagnant.

So many people are sitting on ideas, talents, and callings all because they’re letting fear and overthinking stop them. But no dream is too big for God. He just needs your yes. And after your yes, He needs your consistency.

Faith comes by hearing, and hearing the Word of God. The problem isn’t that we can’t hear, it’s that we don’t do. God is looking for people who will move when He speaks. This life isn’t about our comfort, it’s about fulfilling purpose and advancing the Kingdom. We can’t keep letting fear talk us out of obedience. God knows what He’s doing. He’ll never leave us hanging. His will is the safest place to be.

So spend time with Him. Stay in your Word. Sit in His presence. And when He speaks…go. Move immediately. Don’t delay. The Spirit of God lives inside of you. He’s already equipped you. Your job is to trust Him and keep showing up. That’s what separates those who walk in purpose from those who stay stuck, obedience and consistency.

There’s nothing too hard for God. Don’t forget who you serve. What you’re stressing over has already been handled in Heaven. All you have to do is walk it out with Him. My mama always says, “The Holy Spirit will save you time, energy, and money.” And she’s right. You don’t have to do life in your own strength. His strength is made perfect in your weakness.

So when you feel tired, overwhelmed, or unsure, lean into the Word. Write down what God shows you. Keep a record. Because one of the biggest attacks from the enemy is targeted at your memory. If he can make you forget what God said, you’ll forfeit what God promised. Just look at the book of Judges. Every time the people forgot, they fell into chaos.

Whatever God told you to do, do it. The last instruction still matters. Do it well. You will not fail. Keep Christ at the center, and keep moving forward in faith.
